I’d like to propose a musical match up – the uniting of two voices for the sake of the music. I’d like to see Rickie Lee Jones paired with Bon Iver lead singer Justin Vernon. They’re both dear to my heart and I can just see (or hear) them together and I’d be willing to bet they’d both be up for it.
I have mentioned Justin Vernon a few times lately and it’s not like I’m obsessed. I just happen to think he’s really good and I’m not the only one. What makes him interesting is that for a guy so in the now, he seems to have a strong appreciation for his predecessors and it’s reflected in his sound. I’ve also read that he counts female singers among his greatest influences, placing Rickie Lee Jones high on his list. She’s a legendary voice that might be intimidating to some but perhaps it will take a guy who once minored in women’s studies to man up to the challenge.
When we met with RLJ last year (podcast here), we talked about how she would have great chemistry with another favorite, Colin Hay. She said she had actually sung with him once and really enjoyed it. Really what she said was that it was so good it was like great sex and she would happily do it again. I wouldn’t rule out that duo but there’s something about Rickie Lee and Justin that just feels right.
I’ve been tossing this idea around awhile but it was further cemented this weekend when I happened to catch the PBS special Duets hosted by Kenny Loggins. It’s where he shows some of the most unforgettable music match ups of our time and when you see pairs like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell or Elton John and Kiki Dee or Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, it’s clear that when two distinct voices are joined in perfect harmony, some songs are just meant to be. It doesn’t happen as much these days but maybe it’s time.
I may not be The Millionaire Matchmaker but these two seem like a couple who could make beautiful music together and at the very least produce one good song. We’re going to reach out to their friends and followers and if this hookup can be arranged, I only ask that I serve as witness and am first to toast their beloved union.
